What does EPA stand for?
The term EPA is used when a wood stove fireplace meets the standards of the U.S. Agency for Environmental Protection (EPA). This standard is to verify the emissions of harmful pollutants from your wood stove or fireplace. Since September 1st 2009, in Quebec, it is prohibited to manufacture or sell wood stoves or fireplaces that do not meet this standard.
In addition to being greener, this standard increases the performance of the devices since they offer a duel combustion of the wood. These wood stoves or fireplaces consume less wood. For the same heating efficiency, an EPA wood stove or fireplace can consume up to one third less wood than a normal wood stove or fireplace.
